The Red River D Belt Buckle

Stagecoach made John Wayne a star, but Red River made him a legend. It wasn’t until Wayne made director Howard Hawks’ rugged tale of the first cattle drive up the Chisholm Trail that he became a full-fledged super-star. And, the “Duke” never forgot his special debt to Hawks. When RR finally completed filming after much hardship, the director had a small number of belt buckles made up commemorating the troubled production. Each buckle had the Red River D brand, the year of filming 1946, and in a looped-off area, the initials of the recipient. However, Wayne and Hawks had formed such a strong friendship that they traded buckles. For the rest of their lives, Hawks wore the buckle with Wayne’s initials and Wayne wore the buckle with HWH for Howard Winchester Hawks. In fact, Wayne wears that buckle on screen in numerous films beginning with Rio Bravo. Now, the Bohlin Company is offering a stunning replica of the Red River D Belt buckle.
