| I had known for a year before its dramatic announcement at the 2009 NRA Show Ruger had an AR-15 rifle in the works, one that was much more than just another clone. At last, I was able to get my hands on a few of them and put some rounds downrange with them. I liked what I saw and felt. In early June ’09, I drove to the Ruger factory in Newport, NH to tour the production line and get some inside skinny. I was able to sit down with Ruger’s savvy PR guy Ken Jorgensen, and with Mark Gurney. Mark is project manager on the SR-556. He was with Ruger for 14 years in their Pine Tree Casting operation, and managed engineering for about ten of that, before being assigned to the SR-556 project. Now that the .338 Lapua is the darling of the sniper world, I had to try one to see what all the fuss is about. My experience as a sniper was over a decade ago on a fairly progressive police sniper team. We were pretty well equipped with Remington 700 actions, Hart barrels in H&S Precision stocks. The guns were all .308s, and they suited us well for the distances we generally needed to be prepared for. My buddy Chris on the other hand is currently a Navy SEAL sniper and has seen four tours in the Middle East. Get the full story in the GUNS Magazine Combat 2010 |

| COMBATIVE HUNTING RIFLE Shooting And Accessorizing Remington's R-25 Richard Mann |

American hunters have been carrying combat rifles to the field for a long time. Pioneers used their combat rifles to put food on the table and to battle Indians. Let’s not forget the 98 Mauser; how many have carried that rifle, a customized version or some clone, all over the world in pursuit of game. Combat rifle to hunting rifle is a natural transition and one that makes sense, especially if you believe in using a proven military design. Get the full story in the GUNS Magazine Combat 2010 |

In that “little war” of 1950 to 1953 known as the Korean Conflict, one side was armed almost totally with American weapons. Those were the United Nations forces. By my study the only country involved on that side that provided their own arms was Great Britain. All others — Turkey, France, and so forth — provided small token combat units and it was far easier to give them American weapons than endure the supply headache that would be caused by bringing their own. The police department I retired from has always been more progressive than most when it comes to issuing the officers the best and newest tools. We were one of the first agencies to field the taser as an individual officer tool, not just a special tool only sergeants had in their cars. Get the full story in the GUNS Magazine Combat 2010 |

| SURVIVAL GEAR What's In Your Kit? Richard Mann |

The first thing most gun guys think of when preparing for a survival situation is a firearm. It’s understandable, we tend to focus on the things we like most. However, in a situation where you may be required to survive, like if lost on a wilderness camping trip, stranded with a broken down vehicle in remote nowhere or maybe even trying to struggle through a week in a hurricane-ravaged city, it’s more likely you’ll need some other stuff before you need a gun. | COLT .22 TACTICAL RIMFIRE AR Practice For Pennies On The Dollar Richard Mann |

From a practical standpoint a dimensionally correct AR rifle chambered for the .22 LR makes sense because it will allow you to practice with a rifle that emulates the feel and operation of a standard AR for a fraction of the cost. A hundred bucks will easily buy you 1000 rounds of good quality .22 LR ammunition. That’s around $600 less than what you’ll pay for 1000 rounds of good .223 Remington ammo. Enough of a savings to buy a new Colt .22 Tactical Rimfire! Get the full story in the GUNS Magazine Combat 2010 |
