COVER STORY:
ROBAR QR-2
The Do All Rifle
Sammy Reese

  GUNS Combat 2009 Special Edition

  Robar QR-2

If shooting the smallest groups possible is your goal in life, I’m right there with you. No matter what type of rifle I’m shooting, I always find myself chasing the one hole dream. I’ve caught myself doing it at 100 yards with an iron sighted 30-30 levergun. It only took me about a box of ammo to finally come out of the one hole quest and realize a sub 2" groups was going to put meat on the table. What can I say? It’s the sniper in me.

ROBAR

Robbie Barrkman makes all of our sub MOA dreams come true. Robbie — for those who don’t know — is the chief cook and bottle washer at Robar. To call Robbie a craftsmen is almost an insult. His creations, whether they be pistols, rifles or custom furniture, are museum quality works of art. In a sometimes not-so-nice world, the first two provide me great comfort because I know I can bet my life on them.

  THE M24
US Army's Sniper Weapon System
Cliint Smith
  The M24 Sniper

The M24 SWS — Sniper Weapons System — rifle was developed in 1988 based on the Remington 700 long action. Many current forums and printed materials would have you believe the M24 is dead and no longer in service after being replaced by the new M110 SASS rifle. The M110 may be accepted as a replacement, but apparently not so quickly in reality.

A personal friend just deployed overseas into a combat zone and his Special Forces detachment is still carrying the supposed outdated and replaced M24. Knights Armament’s M110 was selected as the new SASS — Semi-Automatic Sniper System — in 2005, yet many of the M24s are still in service and actively working in combat zones worldwide. As this is being written, I’m helping some Oregon National Guard troopers and the rifle they brought was the “replaced” Remington M24. Ultimately in the end it will be replaced; as of today it hasn’t happened.

  FIGHTING PISTOLS
Because You Just Might Have To
Clint Smith
  Fighting Pistols

I guess it goes without saying we can fight with a handgun. But the extent to which we actually practice with one and believe it actually is a viable fighting tool might be another issue. I have said, “you use a handgun to fight your way to a rifle you shouldn’t have put down in the first place.” Another writer wrote in an article later on saying he would call “bullshit” on my statement of using a pistol to get to a rifle. Like many things today, the word twisting manipulation of what I said was used to get a point across which was if all you had was a handgun you should fight with it. The writer is correct, anyone who knows me or has the slightest bit of common sense knows if all you have is a handgun to start with, or as the weapon at hand, you should fight with it. But a rifle is still better.

  COMBAT KITS
Guns & Gear In One Bag
Richard Mann
  Combat Kits

My last deployment was in New Orleans immediately following Katrina. I happily turned in my badge shortly after and had given up the camouflage even earlier. Nowadays the only deployment I have to be prepared for is hunting camp or maybe some training course I am either instructing or attending. And, of course, there is always the possibility I may be the lone survivor after a terrible virus sweeps the nation or I may have to “militia-up” when our country is invaded by some foreign power. Nah, no worries there..

  THE XREP AND SHOCKWAVE
Taser's & Mossberg's Electrifying New Battlefield Gear
Holt Bodinson
  Electrifying Battlefield Gear

We increasingly find ourselves in a policing and peacekeeping role on foreign soil, with the need and opportunity to employ less-lethal weapons increasing dramatically. None have come quite so close to perfection as the latest generation of TASER products that will become available to the military and law enforcement communities by early 2009. Meet the XREP and the Shockwave.

But first, a quick look at what TASER terms "Neuro-Muscular Incapacitation," or NMI in TASER speak. At the most basic level, it’s the use of electricity to completely incapacitate an individual. It is, in effect, stopping power, instantly causing the cessation of hostile behavior for a defined period of time.

  MACHINE GUN MADNESS
One Man's Descent Into (Submachine Gun) Madness
Mike “Duke” Venturino
  Submachine Gun

Once I was normal. Well, as normal as anyone could be who has been a gun’riter for almost his entire adult life. Then it happened. It struck like lightning. One minute I was the same jolly old fellow, happy with my racks of Sharps, Winchesters, Colts, and Smith & Wesson N-frames, but I had to have a submachine gun! Not just any submachine gun — a very specific submachine gun. It became an obsession and I happily sold off a great many of those above mentioned guns so I could try to satisfy the madness. It started with wanting only one, but it quickly grew and grew and grew. I don’t think it’s over yet.

  SIMPLIFY FOR SUCCESS
The Basic AR Fighting Rifle
Tiger McKee
  AR Fighting Rifle

After working with the AR for almost 30 years, attending and teaching a lot of rifle classes, I’ve finally determined how an AR rifle should be configured for self-defense or patrol applications. Instead of the common trends associated with today’s AR — heavy barrels, bulky handguards with sharp cornered rails, vertical fore-grips, tactical slings, collapsible stocks, folding sights, complicated lights — my vision for the AR is more of a minimalist approach, a reflection of the M16/AR’s original concepts.
