| The S&K Ultra Walnut rifle stocks are made from three walnut slabs laminated together, reinforced with woven graphite cloth. Cost is reduced as walnut pieces which otherwise would be too small can be used. Strength and stability are enhanced by the laminations and reinforcing cloth. |

| I enjoy finding good rifles at bargain prices and sprucing them up to look like new, or better than new. The Remington 700 has been America’s best selling, bolt-action sporting rifle since it’s introduction in 1962. The 700 is a refined version of the older 721/722 models. As introduced it had a redesigned stock, hinged floorplate (on BDL models), reshaped bolt handle and a few other touches. Back in 1962 when the quality of American-produced firearms seemed to be declining, Remington’s upgrades were much appreciated by shooters. Add the popularity of the sensational 7mm Remington Mag, also introduced in 1962, and the 700 was an instant success. I’m always on the lookout for these early rifles, as they can be terrific bargains. Actually there are plenty of good used guns. I especially like 700s for several reasons. Because so many were made they are easy to find. Replacement parts (if needed) and accessories are readily available. The strong, simple, reliable 700 action has been the basis of many super accurate rifles. Remington makes good barrels and even if the barrel is worn out from shooting or neglect, it is easy to have a replacement fitted. This admiration applies to the excellent 700 action and Remington’s good barrels, but I draw the line at admiring the ’60s-era stocks. Though nicely shaped and comfortable to shoot, those stocks introduced the despised pressed-in checkering, which did absolutely nothing to improve grip or handling. |
