| This is a fairly early (1971-’72 era) Ruger 77 .30-06 “round top” drilled and tapped for scope bases rather than the Ruger integral bases. The scope is a Weaver K4 with Conetrol rings and bases. |

| The year 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of the Ruger 77 rifle, one of the most successful and influential in the highly competitive bolt-action sporting rifle market. To appreciate the influence of the Model 77, we have to go back to the years before it appeared in 1968. American gunmakers had it tough in the early ’60s. Some were still using labor-intensive manufacturing methods and were finding skilled labor expensive. The quality of fit, finish, and function of several popular rifles deteriorated noticeably. Companies introduced new techniques requiring less handwork, such as stamped-in checkering. Writers considered it self-evident the era of fine rifles was over. Current rifles weren’t as well made as older ones and new models would be worse yet. For a penniless teenage rifle enthusiast, the future looked bleak. It seemed clear by the time I had any money there would be no good guns to buy. The introduction of the Ruger 77 in 1968 was a rare ray of light. Bill Ruger was man of taste and distinction, who admired quality and function and disliked show and ostentation. He was also a brilliant designer and businessman. He never forgot what we rifle enthusiasts seldom consider: guns have to sell at a price we’re willing to pay. |
