Extreme Shock Ammunition
John Taffin
My two main house guns, those most likely to be at instant reach whether I am awake or sleeping are both semiautos loaded with jacketed hollowpoints. Next to the chair where I spend a lot of time reading is a favorite Smith & Wesson 3913. I often carry it as it fits so easily into the waistband and stays put. My second semiauto is a bedside Ruger KP345 .45 ACP.

As a result of my recent testing of Extreme Shock ammunition, both of these pistols now have seen the round in the chamber and the first few rounds out of the magazine changed. Extreme Shock offers specially tailored ammunition for use of military, police, anti-terrorism forces, and even home defense. The AFR (Air Freedom Round) is designed for technical entry teams and for use on aircraft where it will not penetrate the backs of seats or even the metal structure. If it hits a hard surface it turns to powder.

Extreme Shock ammunition comes in a 9mm 85-grain AFR, 9mm 115-grain EPR, .45 ACP 125-grain AFR, .45 ACP 185-grain EPR. Taffin’s chairside S&W Model 3913 is now loaded with 9mm 85-grain AFR and the bedside .45 Ruger is now loaded with .45 ACP 125-grain AFR.

My first test was with the 85-grain 9mm AFR using a gallon jug of water. I set the jug on the table at 50', pulled the trigger and was immediately soaked. The AFR performed explosively with a muzzle velocity of 1,468 fps from the Smith & Wesson 3913. Switching to the .45 ACP, the 125-grain AFR clocked 1,474 fps, also with explosive results. This is now the first round out of my bedside Ruger .45 ACP. If I ever have to use either one of these pistols I know the round will not penetrate through walls.

For hunting and street use, Extreme Shock offers the EPR (Enhanced Penetration Round), designed to penetrate thick skin or bone and then fragment inside softer tissue. The 9mm version weighs 115-grains and clocks out at 1,245 fps while the 185-grain .45 has a velocity of 1,176 fps. Extreme Shock also offers special .223, 7.62x39, and .308 rifle ammunition. Currently Extreme Shock ammunition is used by such groups as the FBI, Miami-Dade International Airport, and several SWAT teams and military forces worldwide.
